Communication Console

Personnel manning the Communications Station monitor all frequencies in both sub-space and sub-light levels for messages either directed to the ship, or which may have an impact on ship’s operations. All outgoing transmissions are channeled through this station. Any intraship communication circuits may be overridden from this station. Control of the Main Viewing Screen resides with the officer on watch at the Communication console.

Six multi-purpose screens compose the major portion of the Communications Console. The top three are primarily used to display frequency and power characteristics of incoming subspace and sub-light signals. The bottom three provide the same information for outgoing signals.

Other information which may be displayed on these screens include communication buoy coordinates and characteristics, message authentication, receipt verification, and visual transcripts of both outgoing and incoming messages. Two small speakers can be activated if desired, although most aural services are provided by a device which is inserted into the operator’s outer ear.

Controls to manage and monitor all intercom circuits are on either side of the console. Along the bottom are direct-access intercom buttons for the Commanding Officer’s Suite, the Operations Officer, Engineering Officer, Medical Officer, Science Officer, Security Officer, and the Shuttlebay. An eighth intercom button can be programmed as desired.
