Mission : RETURN TO OMICRON DELTA

Art by Linda Olsen 1995

The contents of the Ship Logs are considered to be a "compilation" under the provisions of Title 17, U.S. Code (known as the Copyright Act): that is, "A work formed by the collection and assembling of preexisting materials or of data that is selected, coordinated or arranged in such a way that the resulting work as a whole constitutes an original work of authorship." As such, it is the property of the ship’s Captain; however, automatic transfer of ownership to STARSHIPS OF THE THIRD FLEET is effected upon publication of this mission by the ship’s Captain ipso facto.

As outlined in Circular 1 (Copyrighted Basics, Library of Congress, Washington DC, USGPO 1989-262-309/12), "copyrighted in each separate contribution to a periodical or other collective work is distinct from the copyright in the collective work as a whole and vests initially with the author of the contribution."

This mission may not be reproduced in any form without the express, written authorization of STARSHIPS OF THE THIRD FLEET.

Prologue

From the Ship’s Log of USS EXETER (NCC-2006), August, 2309

Let's face it. Dealing with "the thing" is not what most persons would consider entertainment. Maybe a few crewmembers on the edge would really enjoy confronting the vampire like entity, but not me, and not most of the crew. It's time for a change of pace... Something that would take our minds off what we had to contend with recently. It was with this in mind that I requested some down time for the crew. Noting our current position, and the short travel time to the nearest planet, Omicron Delta, the Admiral approved. Within days, we will be in orbit around the planet. All crewmembers not required for basic services are directed to transport to the surface for shore leave.

A brief summary of the information available from the ship's library follows:

A wondrous place discovered by Captain Kirk and the Federation starship ENTERPRISE nearly twenty-five years ago - discovered quite by accident.

Omicron Delta is a play world originally created purely for the amusement of a race of beings that were far more advanced than the human race - and far more sophisticated. The below-ground computers were designed to read the desires of the visitors and then turn those thoughts into reality.

It would have been all well and good if their thoughts could have been carefully controlled! Unfortunately, the crew of the ENTERPRISE had some pretty perilous moments before things settled down and a good time was had by all.

Since humanoids seemed to have populated this section of the galaxy, the strange aliens who had created this world have evidently moved on to "greener pastures", abandoning the planet with it's subsurface computers and factories.

The computers, not designed to sit idly by with nothing to do, have regenerated themselves to provide recreation more in line with the 24th Century Starfleet personnel. Shore leave parties now must only select the "world" they desire to be in and they are transported to it. Like a skiing weekend? Or maybe ride a horse off into the sunset in the Old West? Go to an old Terran carnival? Select it and you're transported there! Whatever your desire, it's available. One thing you might want to keep in mind, most but not all of the people you meet in this world are manufactured... Other starships personnel may be on shore leave in the area.
