Physical Appearance: Physically, Soen has the white hair and blue skin
of her kind. She is considered attractive by humanoid races; her large eyes are
level and clear and are the rare and unique sionar color, which appears
black but is actually an incredibly deep purple. Her figure is trim and
muscular. Her hair is long and heavy and although it would be easier in her line
of work to have it cut, she has avoided doing so for two reasons. Her father
likes it that way for that is how her mother's was, and the instant her twin
Lailen trimmed hers to the shoulder, Soen decided that she didn't like the look.
Personality: Generally, Soen is a very pleasant being to deal with, at
least until she loses her temper. She has a wry sense of humor and is not afraid
to voice an observation about a situation or a person. Her father has often
expressed utter exasperation with her penchant for telling people exactly what
she thinks. He will often bring up the one occasion when Andor's oldest and most
revered councilman walked out of a reception at the Mon'Teith home when a
seven-year-old Soen quite coolly informed him that it was rude to pile his plate
so high with appetizers, and that being so old he should not be so fat, anyway.
Soen does not have very many close friends, although she has many acquaintances.
But those that she does take to her heart are at once blessed and cursed. She
will never desert them, but they are also often the recipients of her most
explosive outbursts. As the Terrans say, you must take the bitter with the
sweet.
Other Pertinent Data: Soen Mon'Teith is an award-winning archer,
having even participated once in the Olympics. She won the silver medal, losing
by a thread to one of her own teammates. She continued her archery at the
Academy and won several awards, but was too busy to ever again keep at it
seriously enough competing in the Olympics again. Her expertise in marksmanship
extends to all manners of projectile weapons, and she was a training assistant
at the Academy her junior and senior years. She is of course proficient in hand
to hand, although her style has been classified as "anything goes."
She never could find one discipline she favored completely and so merely drew
what she liked from all that she learned.
Soen is highly competitive and a sore loser, even when she has lost fairly,
although she does not remain in an ill humor about it for long.
She is a proficient player on the adjestard, which is roughly
equivalent to a Terran mandolin and the traditional instrument of the Mon'Teith
family. She also has a fine alto voice, but much prefers to play than sing.
Soen was also born on the extra day in winter that marks Andor's leap year,
so technically her birthday only comes around every five years. It is not a fact
she shares lightly, not since a group at the Academy threw a party to celebrate
her fourth birthday her first year and thought it would be funny to give gifts
befitting an actual four-year-old. She'd smiled at the time and then gotten
revenge later.
History: The Mon'Teiths are an old family of the Clan of the Warrior,
and very highly respected in Andorian society. Open any book on Andorian history
and look on any page and there will be the name Mon'Teith. Soen and her twin
sister, Lailen, are the eldest children of Tovaseth Mon'Teith, the current
leader or pa'terik of the Mon'Teith family. Both children were gregarious
and outgoing, although Lailen ended up being the more diplomatic of the two.
Lailen was the one earning social and civic awards and commendations while Soen
was accepting medals for athletics and the like. It was Lailen who had to soothe
her sister's wounded pride at every loss or imagined flaw, and it was Soen who
was caught threatening classmates when Lailen would confess to dislikes or hurt
feelings.
At the age of three they had to learn to deal with the arrival of a brother,
Ceron, and not a year after that Darik arrived. When Darik was eleven, Kerrisan
Mon'Teith, along with several others, was killed when the liner she was taking
to Alpha Centauri to join her husband at a conference exploded en route. The
cause was determined to be a faulty warp coil.
It took the family a while to get back to normal after that tragedy, but soon
Lailen announced her decision to enter the Academy of Arts in Daldorran and
pursue a career in Diplomatic Relations. Soen supported her sister and was in
turn supported when she told her father her plans to apply to Starfleet Academy.
Lailen's persuasive ways were invaluable; Tovaseth was reluctant to let either
of his daughters out of his sight after losing his wife. But he knew Soen was
dissatisfied with staying home; she'd looked into the Militia Corps, and
although it was in the area of what she thought she wanted to do, it still
wasn't quite right. So he soon relented and Soen went to Terra, becoming a
member of the Class of 2310.
Soen was an exceptional student academically, and soon discovered that her
idea of a career in Security was a good one. She enjoyed every aspect of her
curriculum. She kept in close touch with her sister, and Lailen would laugh when
Soen would grudgingly admit to often stopping to think of what Lailen would do
in a given situation before acting on impulse. What really galled was that those
situations were often the ones she ended up being most praised for both by her
instructors and peers, even if in the end she had to resort to her own ways.
She graduated in the top ten percent of her class and was immediately
assigned to Starbase 210, a large and busy port near the Neutral Zone and a
stopover for many shipping and freighter lines. Soen had to deal with a wide
variety of problems and situations, everything from smuggling to common brawls
to arranging house security for visiting dignitaries. But after two and a half
years, even as she accepted more responsibility, she was itching to get out. The
starbase felt too confining; she wanted to get on a ship. A ship moved,
went where it wanted. She wouldn't have to wait for something to happen on a
ship, she could go where the action was.
Her wishes came true when she was transferred to the USS Shockwave, a
scout vessel that patrolled along the Neutral Zone and beyond, protecting the
shipping lanes and the small stations. The Shockwave dealt with smugglers
and pirates and she grew to love the excitement of the chase. She garnered even
more responsibility and respect during that tour. She wasn't even aware of the
opening on the USS Phoenix until her captain told her he had recommended
her. "I don't like losing you," the human said, "but
this is the perfect opportunity for you." Soen wasn't sure about that;
she was happy where she was. Yet, when the word came down that the position was
hers if she wanted it, she couldn't resist.
The Phoenix is much larger than any ship she's ever been on, but Soen
is ready to take on the title and responsibility of
Beta Watch Team Leader.
