Physical Appearance: Shane appears taller and slimmer than
she really is due to her long legs. She wears her very dark, long, straight hair
pulled back in a ponytail most of the time. She hates wearing it loose because
she grew up in a highly mechanized society where order is very important—and
they have the tradition of wearing it long, so cutting it short is something she
would never consider. She has slim long-fingered hands, which help give her
strength and dexterity—very helpful when working as a pilot. She speaks with a
soft—almost unnoticeable—accent reflecting her society’s Irish background.
Personality: Shane is a bit of an optimist. She’s quite warm and
friendly but takes her career very seriously. When’s she focused, stand aside
or get run over. As the youngest of five children, she’s had to prove herself
time and time again so she’s not afraid to take a situation head on and
wrestle with it until she’s got it whipped. She’s a little shy socially
because women were mostly seen and not heard on her planet and following years
of her father telling her "pipe down!" she’s taken his orders to
heart. But get her talking about ships or exploring new places and you’ll
never get her to shut up. And while she’d never admit it, actually is quite a
graceful dancer. Shane’s a bit naïve when it comes to men, since she left
home before the age when the intermingling of sexes for social enjoyment began.
Other Pertinent Data: Shane’s got a lovely clear voice and plays the
lap harp—one her granddad made with his own hands. (This is extra special
because on Eire IV nearly everything is made by machine so something handcrafted
is a considered as precious as any of the rarest minerals in the galaxy.)
History: Shane’s parents didn’t want her to leave their planet where
the role of a young woman was clear. Home, family, children. It’s not that
Shane doesn’t want those, it’s that she knows she has a gift as a pilot and
she wants someday to captain her own ship. It’s important to her to set her
own destiny rather than have it decided for her.
Shane discovered her ability for flying quite by accident when she and her
brothers were out in a small flyer and during a tussle (a regular occurrence for
the burly Brookstone boys) Connor, her oldest brother, who was supposed to be
piloting the vessel got hurt. Shane pushed her brothers out of the way and took
the controls. The rest was history. Within a short time, she was piloting
surface shuttles and soon begged and pleaded her way into the planet’s freight
corps. She was the first female ever to be allowed to do so.
Once off the surface of the planet, she was drawn to space in a way she could
never have imagined. It captured her imagination and made her feel freedom in a
way she never could have dreamed. Without her parents’ permission, she sneaked
aboard a freighter heading off to Starbase VI. While aboard, she broke into the
computer’s data systems and learned everything it knew about Starfleet and the
Academy. By the time, they reached the Starbase; she had decided that she had to
do whatever it took to make it to the Academy and into Starfleet.
It wasn’t an easy thing for her to do, forget trying to convince her parents,
but at last, she made it. She loved the Academy and the open easy doors for
everyone. But what drove her was her desire to learn so she didn’t make many
life-changing friends there.
Shane’s a whiz with anything mechanical, particularly computers. This comes
from the highly mechanized and computerized society on Eire. Understanding
computers is like breathing to her. Don’t try and explain it to her, just step
aside and let her do it.
She’s completed one tour of duty on a deep space science vessel and there
showed a quick mind for organization and operations, but her real love is
flying, particularly small fast vessels. She’s thrilled for the opportunity
being given to her on the USS PHOENIX and knows the best is yet to come. |
